Quick chat with Sol Campbell
Arsenal legend Sol Campbell visited Kenya to help with an Arsenal coaching course in Nairobi, promoted by Kenyan Premier League sponsors SportPesa.

Q Victor Wanyama is Kenya’s first footballer to make it in the English Premier League. Are there more players to discover in Kenya?
I believe there are – only they have not been exposed. The talent is here and right across Africa. For me, you’ve got the ingredients. But you need the infrastructure. That’s the difference. But I’ve been very impressed with what I’ve seen.

Q What do Kenyan clubs need to do?
We need players developed from a young age in academies. Then they would be better players when they arrive in Europe. We need structures that will aid transition from the youth to first team.

Q Can watching Wanyama inspire other players?
Yes! He’s been very consistent. He’s a great ambassador for Kenya.

Kenya stages one of its most unusual and colourful sporting events this month – the Maralal Camel Derby (19-21 August). As well as to serious jockeys, the event is open to amateurs – many of whom struggle to keep control of their camels at a frenetic and chaotic start. This year a cycling race, open to both serious and amateur mountain bike riders, is also due to be held.

The dates for the 2016-17 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series schedule have been announced, with Kenya’s heroes starting their campaign in Dubai in December. Kenya enjoyed one of their best ever seasons in the tournament in 2015-16, finishing seventh in the table. They also won a title for the first time in their history, triumphing in Singapore, and won the Shield in London in May.

Steve Tikolo, widely regarded as Kenya’s greatest ever cricketer, has been appointed head coach of the Uganda Cricket Association.
