A warm welcome to you aboard Kenya Airways

As ‘The Pride of Africa’ we are always keen to sing the praises of our wonderful continent – whether it’s celebrating its vibrant culture, extraordinary wildlife, head-turning landscapes or inspirational individuals. In this issue of msafiri you’ll find all these things in abundance.

We are proud to acknowledge the literary prowess of this year’s Caine Prize winner, Tope Folarin, and the four shortlisted authors in what is widely acclaimed as the ultimate showcase of African writing talent. Read an excerpt from Folarin’s prize-winning piece, Miracle, and find out what motivates these creative scribes.

Equally inspiring is our interview with Kenyan conservationist Dr Paula Kahumbu. Her passion for protecting pachyderms is a trumpet call to action. We urge you to support both her charity, WildlifeDirect, and our ongoing campaign with the Born Free Foundation to raise funds for the conservation of elephants and other threatened African species. You’ll find a Change for Change envelope in your seat-back pocket. Every little helps.

Elephants are not the only Kenyan icons we celebrate in this issue. On page 70 we salute the rich diversity of the country’s culture, while on page 94 David Matende and Kelai Wanjiru marvel at the changing face of Nairobi’s skyline.

Finally, we’re proud to highlight several international destinations on KQ’s global network, from honeymoon boltholes in Paris and the Seychelles to the newly listed World Heritage Site Hill Forts of Rajasthan. Happy travels!
