A warm welcome to you aboard Kenya Airways

We’re delighted to feature one of Kenya Airways’ newest and most exciting destinations in this issue of msafiri. Not only is Livingstone a milestone 60th destination for the airline, but it also provides access to one of the world’s great natural wonders and adventure playgrounds.

From the air, Victoria Falls nicks the tawny hide of Zambia, whitewater glinting like a sliver of bone from the spectacular mile-wide cataract. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the Falls on several occasions. On one visit, I was driven from Livingstone to the banks of the Zambezi a short distance upstream, where a small boat was waiting. After stepping aboard we motored downstream, threading between rocky islets where crocodiles basked in the sun. Small rapids chuckled beneath the hull, jostling the boat and goading us onwards. I felt the cool kiss of spray and watched, transfixed, as we hurried across a channel that slid into misty oblivion a stone’s throw ahead. As soon as I felt the crunch of the bow on land, I leapt ashore. But like me, Livingstone Island trembled.

Perched on the very lip of the Falls, this tiny island marks the spot where, in 1853, Dr David Livingstone first set eyes on Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. Deafened by the roaring cascades of water, I edged towards the very brink of the abyss. Dr Livingstone probably struck an epic pose when he stood there 160 years ago – but as I peered through billowing spray and saw the great plumes of white water cascading from my feet to explode in the gorge 100m below, I felt intrepid enough.

That’s part of the huge appeal of Victoria Falls. Whatever adventure you’re looking for, you’ll find activities to suit – whether you’re an adrenalin junkie in search of bungee jumps and raging whitewater, or a gentle explorer content to simply admire the views.
